Learning Philosophy

Dual Language TK-10th

UCLA Community School prepares all students to live rich and meaningful lives by providing a rigorous dual language instructional program within a strong supportive community that leads to college, careers, and civic participation.

For our youngest students, these experiences start in a Transitional Kindergarten class to build a foundation for passionate and active learning. Building on the language assets of our families, all elementary students participate in a dual language program (Spanish/English or Korean/English) where students receive language and content instruction in two languages. In the secondary grades students take content classes in Spanish enhancing their academic language and content knowledge in two languages.

Socioemotional Learning: TK-12

TK-8 Second Step

Children benefit from social-emotional learning (SEL) at any time, but today it’s especially important to help them develop the skills they need to connect and thrive. Second Step® Elementary is a leading research-based SEL curriculum for students in Kindergarten–Grade 8.

Advisory 6-12

The Advisory program serves as a powerful tool to deepen the school’s vision that prepares all students for college, work, and civic participation and that personalizes learning for each student focusing on specific, grade appropriate elements and practices that will encourage students’ progress to achieving the Core Competencies.

Seminar 6th-12th

The Seminar program offers students the unique opportunity to explore their interests and passions through interdisciplinary, project-based classes. In these student selected seminars, learning extends beyond the classroom as students engage in hand-on-experiences and collaborate with community partners. Each semester culminates in a showcase where students present their work and share their learning journeys with the school community, celebrating their growth and creativity.

AP for All

For two consecutive years the school was recognized by the College Board on its AP School Honor Roll. The Honor Roll "offers schools recognition across four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Schools on the AP School Honor Roll may also earn the AP Access Award, honoring schools that demonstrate a clear and effective commitment to equitable access to advanced coursework." (College Board, 2023)

In 2024 the school received the Platinum Access award, a distinction earned by only 7% of eligible schools in the US and Canada.

College Center

The college center is a space for students to gather information, resources and receive services to navigate the college application and exploration process. We believe ALL students should have access to resources that lead to higher education and beyond.

We are proud to offer a variety of services and assistance to serve students including individual counseling appointments, group presentations, workshops, school-wide events, many college rep visits, various college campus visits, evening events, dual college enrollment and more. The college center is open during nutrition, lunch and after school to assist students and families.
