Upper School 9-12

Philosophy

All students enroll in a rigorous sequence of college-prep courses that exceed the standards for admission to the University of California/California State University System. Students learn in an eight-period rotating block schedule designed to support the longer time needed for active, inquiry-based learning. In addition to core classes and an advisory period, students explore their interests and passions through an innovative seminar program that culminates in a Senior Internship experience. The school also partners with Los Angeles City College to offer several college-level courses each semester.

AP for All

For two consecutive years the school was recognized by the College Board on its AP School Honor Roll. The Honor Roll "offers schools recognition across four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Schools on the AP School Honor Roll may also earn the AP Access Award, honoring schools that demonstrate a clear and effective commitment to equitable access to advanced coursework." (College Board, 2023)

In 2024 the school received the Platinum Access award, a distinction earned by only 7% of eligible schools in the US and Canada.

Dual Language TK-10th

As the transition between the lower grades and high school, the middle school provides a nurturing student-centered learning community. Instruction is cored in 6th grade to enable students to develop close relationships with two content teachers (math/science and English/history).

In 7th and 8th grades, students move upstairs and rotate across core classes and project-based seminars, supported by the same advisor for two years. 7th and 8th students demonstrate their learning at the end of 8th grade before they culminate to the high school.

Dual Enrollment 8-12th

The school also partners with Los Angeles City College, as part of the SuperGrad Program, to offer several college-level courses each semester starting in 8th grade. College classes are available to all students through dual enrollment which are embedded in the school day as well as offered after school.

Seminar 6th-12th

The Seminar program offers students the unique opportunity to explore their interests and passions through interdisciplinary, project-based classes. In these student selected seminars, learning extends beyond the classroom as students engage in hand-on-experiences and collaborate with community partners. Each semester culminates in a showcase where students present their work and share their learning journeys with the school community, celebrating their growth and creativity.

Advisory 6th-12th

The Advisory program serves as a powerful tool to deepen the school’s vision that prepares all students for college, work, and civic participation and that personalizes learning for each student focusing on specific, grade appropriate elements and practices that will encourage students’ progress to achieving the Core Competencies.

Students remain together with the same Advisory teacher and peers for the 4 years of their high school career.
